Men and Women in Society

Today in class we had to split up into two groups. The first group had to write down traits that define a woman in society on a poster. The second group had to write down traits that define a man in society on a poster as well. I was part of the first group. My group came up with many features that a woman should attribute according to today's society.

We came up with words like, motherly, fragile, organized, higher voice, insecurity, crazy, gossip, etc. This is what is expected of women today. We have this notion that you have to be a certain way to be considered a woman. You have to follow many rules to be able to call yourself a woman.

The second group came up with terms like, testosterone, muscular and athletic, body hair, deep voice, etc. Our next assignment was to post our posters on the board and write around it what would happen if women refused to follow the norms listed. Here are some of the results.

Later that day, we went to the diversity workshop. We had to do a small survey about our identities. We walked towards the category where we most identified with and the least. It got a little heavy for some of us. I wasn't ready for that to occur. I wasn't ready to share some very personal things. In the end, everyone was extremely supportive and understanding.

Today was extremely busy. It was an interesting day as well.
