A Very Long Day

Today I woke up really tired. For some reason I was not able to sleep. The girls and I went to go eat breakfast at Ratty. When we were outside, I did not expect it to be that hot. It is really humid out here and even though there is some breeze, it is still really hot. I know from now on I will really appreciate Richmond weather. It might take me a while to acclimate.

Once we arrived to the cafeteria I thought it was huge. It is about 4 times bigger than the cafeteria in Richmond High School. There were students going in and out whatever time they want before 10:30. I wish we had that kind of freedom in high school. It really looks like how everything looks in movies. Although the food was not really appealing since I did not feel well, I ate it anyways. I knew if I skipped breakfast I was going to feel even worse so I ate cereal. Coco puffs are my favorite so of course I had to eat that. The girls and I chatted for a bit and talked about the events and activities there will be that we would like to attend. After that we head back to our dorm and decided to meet up later for orientation.

As we were coming in I noticed a lot of students were checking in their dorms which was really exiting because all of the halls were really quiet and lonely since we had arrived earlier than the rest of the students. I decided to lay down for a while hoping I would feel better.

Later I received a text from everyone saying we were going to the tour. Jason was our tour guide and It was actually quite helpful but a long walk it felt. There is a lot of grass and they are named differently. The Main green is really big. Most of the people hang out there or rest for a bit. The Quiet Green is a lot how it sounds like. This is where it is all quiet and people usually study here or take time to read a book. One of the libraries has one of the largest comic book collections which is really interesting. Jason mentioned if you walk 10 minutes away from the campus in any direction you will find great places. There are libraries, places to workout, restaurants, and more.

After the tour was over, Ms. Neal let us know we were going to go and pick out our Brown sweatshirt/hoodies. I was really excited. By this time I felt way better. Once we arrived to the store, there was a big selection. I wanted to pick out the perfect one. I really liked this Brown grey hoodie but, unfortunately they did not have my size. I picked out a burgundy hoodie instead. Although it was the smallest size they had it still fit me a little big.

The Albino Snake
On our way to get the fans we needed, we saw this man walking around with this huge snake around his neck acting like it was totally normal. I was fascinated by it and really wanted to get up close. Gabrielle and I were speed walking trying to reach the guy while Ms. Neal and the rest of the girls followed us. We were both really shy to say anything so Ms. Neal asked him if we could take some pictures of the snake. The guy gave us a lot of facts about snakes, the relationship between them two, and what he has been through. He mentioned his snake was named Angel. She is an albino snake that weighs 145 pounds. The way he knows she is albino is by her red eyes. He has gotten bit by snakes 45 times and out of all of them only 4 were not poisonous. He mentioned that there was a big difference between being bit by a snake that is poisonous and venomous. He actually has a better connection with snakes than humans which I think is insane. I would really be scared to hold a snake like him. How could he have a better connection with them if they cannot even talk? I think it is really weird.

Brown Orientation
After the girls rented their fans, we headed to the orientation as quickly as possible. The way it started was to get to know a little about the people that were attending. Surprisingly only two people were from Rhode Island. I really expected more. There were people from Paris, Greece, Alabama, Dominican Republic and more but we did not get to meet them. During the orientation, we got to know all of the RA’S and the community director. Robin mentioned all the cool stuff about Brown and staying here. There is this cool hashtag this police officer uses on twitter. Some other ones where everyone has access to checkout your picture is #summeratbrown and #brownprecollege.

After the orientation we had two meetings with everyone who was staying on the same floor in the dorm and the second part of the orientation. There are only girls in our floor which is pretty cool. We had ice breakers which really helped to get to know each other better. We also played games that helped us memorize all of our names. Unfortunately, I had a really hard time memorizing everyone’s names. I met two girls that were from California. One of them, Emily, was from Santa Barbara which is not that far from where I live. Many of them really travel a lot but they mentioned this was also a new experience for them. Many other courses they have took at other schools did not have as many great things Brown has including the dorms. Our RA, Davion was surprised they really liked the dorms and so was I. They are not the worst but they could be a bit better. Our RA is actually really cool and I could honestly say I really trust him and I really appreciate that he lets us call him whenever or text him and he will be there for us.

A really nice river we passed by.
Before the second part of the meeting started, we had a break and an activities fair right after. Since many of the girls and I still needed to buy stuff we needed in a CVS or Walgreens, we decided to walk to a close by CVS. On our way their we realized we had walked too far so we ended up going to another CVS which was located in Downtown Rhode Island. We were walking for what felt like forever! I was dripping in sweat. On our way back we had to walk up hill which was even worse. It was a big work out though. Once we arrived to the campus we were right on time for the activities fair. There was music playing, we took a big group picture, and when it ended people were dancing.

The first day we arrived to our dorm I realized I was not going to have a roommate which was really sad. There were coffee cups on each door that had every girl’s name that was going to stay in the specific room. My room only had my name. When I realized they had put another girls name today, I was really enthusiastic about it. I introduced myself to her and so did she. Her name is Miah and she lives in Maryland. We actually have a couple of things in common which is great. We both love the show Criminal Minds. It is really one of the best shows in my opinion.

Before the day ended the girls and I decided to get together and take a group picture with our Brown gear. It really took us forever to find each other and take a good picture.
The Brown Crew
Now I have to complete my homework for the course I am taking and get ready for tomorrow. The first day of class! So excited and anxious about it. I really cannot wait.

  1. Maybe it’s just me but I found it interesting that you were feeling bad all day all the way up until you went shopping for your hoodie. Let’s see--feeling bad, free gifts from the ILC--feeling good. Do you see a nexus here?
