I woke up a little late today which forced me to rush getting ready. I have noticed I can get five hours of sleep and wake up right on time the next morning, but make that seven and I'll always manage to oversleep. After speed-walking to the ratty and eating much as possible in as little time as possible I headed towards class.
We started with our pre-write and looked at some of the types of leadership that were popular over history such as situational and "great man". We were then told to give some examples of great leaders. Our class came up with some of the classic leaders such as Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, and MLK, as well as Laverne Cox and Joan of Arc, Malala and Mary Wollstonecraft. The majority of our examples were women and people of color which I thought was really awesome.
We played an activity where there were articles, advertisement's, and comics on the walls and we would write our opinions on post-it's surrounding them. Most of them were very infuriating like ad's objectifying women, an article about a congresswoman that got shot which only talked about how she was married to an astronaut and included his picture instead of hers. There was also images of male superheroes wearing the very impractical and reveling costumes of their female counterparts and standing in their poses. It was a great exercise to see how much media promotes misogyny.
During the break, Esme, Diana, Wendy and I went to Starbucks. I got a hot chocolate and a cheesy everything bagel with cream cheese which were very, very good. After returning to class we played an icebreaker and began our next activity which was called Step In, Step Out. Tori, our TA would read a statement and if it applied to you, you would step into the circle. As you can imagine this became personal very fast, and forced me to think about things I had been trying to ignore most of my life.
Once class ended the cohort, minus Cindy and Erin, went for crepes and rushed to reach our afternoon workshops. I was in College Transitions, in which our leader-fellows talked about tat transition from high school to college and gave us very useful tips about how to make the most of our college experience.
Back at Perkins, I finished basically finished my Action Plan, sans the citations and some final editing. I also cleaned my room and did all the homework, putting all the time management tips I have received to good use. Tomorrow should't be too busy, and I hope to attend a workshop or explore more of Providence!
